ELON - Mrs. Florance Hughes Smith, 100, formerly of Gilliam Road, Elon died at Twin Lakes Center on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Robert Lewis Smith and the daughter of Edd L. Hughes and Susan Eudora Smith Hughes, both deceased. She retired from Burlington Industries after 40 years of service and later worked for 10 years with Hallmark Cards. Florance was a member of Elon Community Church where she was a life member of the Women's Fellowship. She was also a member of the Garden Club and Friendship Club.
Survivors include her daughter Lee Smith Thompson and husband Howard of Greensboro; son, Robert L. Smith Jr. and wife Margaret of Burlington; three grandchildren, Steven L. Thompson and wife Brenda, Chris Thompson and Lorie S. Goodwin and husband Mike; and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Goodwin and Catherine Goodwin.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Wendy Thompson Leonard; a great-grandson, Damien Pearman; two sisters and four brothers.
The funeral service will be conducted at Elon Community Church on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Randy Orwig. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.
