BURLINGTON - Gaynell Perry Roberts, in her 100th year, formerly of Whitsett, NC, passed away on Friday, October 25, 2013, in Roanoke, VA.
Born in Schoolfield, VA on November 16, 1913, she was the only child of Virginia Martin Perry and John Tilton Perry. She was married to the late George W. Roberts on Christmas Eve 1929, and resided at 7298 Burlington Road in Whitsett for over 60 years.
Mrs. Roberts worked in the textile industry, retiring from Minneola in Gibsonville. After retirement she enrolled and graduated from the nursing program at ACC. She worked as a private duty nurse and at Twin Lakes Retirement Center as a nurse's aide until she was almost 90. After her second retirement, it was common to see her working in her yard and garden until failing eyesight forced her to move in with her daughter in her 94th year.
Besides her parents and husband, her eldest son, David Marshall Roberts Sr. and his wife Dorothy preceded her in death. Also preceding her were her half brother Wilbur and his wife Bertha.
She is survived by two sons, Enos Tilton (Bud) Roberts and wife Janet of Tallassee, AL and George W. Roberts and wife Cheryl of Burlington, NC; and one daughter, Harriet Jane, wife of Fiore Louis Nardo of Roanoke, VA . She will forever be remembered by her 12 loving grandchildren and stepgrandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
There were special neighbors and friends who enabled her to maintain her independence for as long as she did. She will be watching over these earthly angels from heaven.
A memorial service will be conducted at Springwood Presbyterian Church on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 2 p.m. by Dr. Genie Martinand Cindy Ingle. Burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of Springwood Presbyterian Church from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the memorial service on Saturday. At other times, the family will be at the home of George and Cheryl Roberts, 2331 Grey Gables West, Burlington.
In lieu of flowers Mrs. Roberts requested that donations be made to Springwood Presbyterian Church, 1422 Springwood Church Road, Burlington, NC 27215, where she was the oldest member and had the longest membership, dating to the 1940's. She also asks that her family and friends remember her and how happy they made her at her surprise 90th birthday party.
