BURLINGTON - George David Skenes, 69, of 3441 Alma Lane, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012 at the Hospice Home following an extraordinary battle with cancer.
A native of Alamance County, he was born April 29, 1943 to the late John Fisher and Mildred York Skenes and was married to Judy Lynn Skenes of the home.
George was of the Baptist faith and retired from Hilldrup Moving and Storage after 44 years of service as operations manager. He had many hobbies, including an interest in knives, guns and, especially, golf. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of the home; daughters, Susie Hill and husband Kenny of Burlington and Tammy Skenes Decker and husband Karl of Liberty; son, Roger Skenes and wife Pamela of Liberty; stepdaughter, Gina Dean and husband Jonathan of Burlington; brothers, the Rev. John Skenes and wife Lena and the Rev. Billy Skenes, both of Burlington; 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and six sisters.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Billy Skenes and the Rev. John Skenes, with the burial to follow at Vickers Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at Lowe Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
