BURLINGTON - Mr. Herbert Lawrence Duff, Jr., 86, of Burlington died at Alamance Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 3:50 a.m.

Born in Suffolk, VA, he was the son of the late Herbert Lawrence Duff, Sr. and Mary Grice Hall Duff Holladay, both deceased. He grew up in Newsoms, VA and Franklin, VA.
Herbert was a veteran of the U. S. Navy serving during World War II from 1945 to 1946. While serving, he was a seaman stationed at the U. S. Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, MD.
Mr. Duff graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of the Cadet Corps while attending the university.
Herbert was employed with Western Electric and AT&T for nearly 40 years. In 1950, he was located in Winston-Salem working as a Production Engineer with naval fire control radar systems and later as an instructor of the Mathematics and Statistical Quality Control and Engineering Associate Training Program. Moving in 1961 to the Burlington location, he designed, developed, and implemented a plant wide Computer Operating System that was unique to the company's manufacturing method of operation, an Anti-ballistic Missile Radar and Control System Production, and a Cost Schedule Control System to track cost and schedule problems associated with production of a U.S. Naval Signal Processing System. He retired in 1989.
Civic activities included the Civitan International, American Red Cross bloodmobile, United Way of Alamance County, NC and AT&T Telephone Pioneers of America. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Some of Herbert's hobbies included model airplane construction and flying, automobile maintenance and repair, collecting and restoring old antique aircraft engines, home gardening, vacation travel to the North American Continent, Hawaii, Europe, Egypt, Holy Land and Jordan, and cruises to Nassau, Bermuda, Jamaica, Panama Canal, and the Mississippi River Boat. He completed and published a book of his memoirs in 2011.
Mr. Duff was a longtime member of Front Street United Methodist Church where he served as past member of the Administrative Board, member and past president of the Builders Sunday School Class, and Tape Ministry where he delivered audio tapes of the Sunday Church Service to shut ins.
On February 4th, 1950, Herbert married Marian Isabel Miller Duff, who passed away February 7, 2013. He is survived by two children, Sharon Hall Duff Brengel of San Diego, CA and Lisa Anne Duff Bright and husband Ed Bright of Raleigh and two grandchildren, Christy Bright Austin and husband Chad Austin of Dearborn, MI and Stephen Philip Bright of Raleigh. He was preceded in death by a brother, Cornelius Hall Duff.
The funeral service will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Monday, June 16, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with the family receiving family and friends from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be held at Old St. Luke's Church Cemetery, Smithfield, VA.
