LIBERTY, N.C. - Homer "Pawpaw" Black, 83, met his Heavenly Father on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the Hospice Home of Alamance-Caswell.
He was born on Nov. 2, 1929 to the late Kivett and Verdie Swing Black. He graduated from Nathanael Greene School and was a lifelong member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Kimesville. He retired from Beamon Corporation in May of 1995 after 30 years of service. After a short break from working, he became a wonderful grandfather and started his new career as being a taxi, baby sitter, avid sports spectator, and entertainer for his grandchildren.
He was a loving husband, father and "Pawpaw." He enjoyed watching the grandkids play sports, camping and taking beach trips with the family. He thought there was nothing more special than his four grandkids, whom he loved dearly.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Virginia Southern Black; two daughters, Sheila Black Ervin and Carol Black Underwood; two grandsons, Jonathan and Cameron Ervin; and two granddaughters, April and Erica Underwood; "adopted grandson," Alex Cheek; brother-in-law, Cecil Jones; special friend, Billy Edwards; and nieces and nephews.
Homer was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Jones; and his brother, Winfred Black.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 8 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 4400 Alamance Church Road, Liberty, officiated by the Rev. Chuck Ireson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 at Loflin Funeral Home of Liberty and at other times at the home.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff at the Hospice Home of Alamance-Caswell for the wonderful care you gave to "Pawpaw" during his last days.
At the family's request, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell, 918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215 or Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 4400 Alamance Church Road, Liberty, NC 27298.
