James Leonard "Bird" Shoffner, 73, of Mooresville, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2013, at the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville.
He was born on Oct. 23, 1939, in Burlington, to the late B.L. and Katie Oakley Shoffner. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard and was a member of Berea Baptist Church in Mooresville. Bird has been involved in racing since the '50s. Some of the teams that Bird has been associated with are Childress Racing-Richard Childress, Marcis Racing-Dave Marcis, Benfield Racing-Joe Ruttman, and Morgan Shepard, Bill Hagan Racing-Terry Labonte, Ganassi-Sabates Racing-Sterling Marlin, Stavola Brothers Racing Bobby Allison (won Daytona in 1988) and Bobby Hillin Jr., Jack Tant Racing-Geoff Bodine (Modified), Benny Parsons, Ray Hendrick, Sam Summers, and Ron Bouchard, Automotive Specialists-Ken Schrader and Ernie Irving and Penske Racing-Rusty Wallace and A.J. Foyt.
Bird worked in and around the NASCAR teams for well over 30 years and finally retired his wrenches in 2005.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Jean Morgan Shoffner; daughters, Freddie Barker and husband, Rick, of Huntersville, Cindy Long and husband, Don, of Apex, and Lynn Warren and husband, Trey, of Concord; sisters, Charlotte Williams and husband, Spencer, of Burlington, and Edith Younger and husband, Jeff, of Gibsonville; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at Berea Baptist Church with the Rev. David Burgess officiating. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to
8 p.m. at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gordon Hospice House, 2341 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625, and/or Berea Baptist Church, 1015 River Highway, Mooresville, NC 28117.
