BURLINGTON, N.C. - John Z. Touloupas, of 2028 Nottingham Lane, son of Zack and Vasiliki (Kakavas) Touloupas, fell asleep in the Lord peacefully Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Feb. 14, 1922 in Columbia, S.C. and in 1928 his father moved his family to Burlington, N.C.
John graduated from Burlington High School and attended UNC-Chapel Hill. He passed his love of the Tar Heels to all his family. He was proud yet private about his service in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was an active member of the Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church in Greensboro and St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church in Burlington, serving on the Parish Council and as Parish Council president in Greensboro. He was a member of A.H.E.P.A. and Evrytanian Association.
He was a charter member of Alamance Country Club. He was a member of Bula Lodge #409 and of the Amran Temple.
He succeeded his father in running Zack's Hot Dogs for 45 years and made it an Alamance County institution.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kaki; daughters, Celia Sims (Roger), Cynthia Rich, Jackie Harrell (Craig); sons, Zack (Sheila) and Michael (Cindy); 16 grandchildren, Michael Sims (Randi), Leigh Anne Ivey (Rich), Brian Fields (Heather), Jacquelin Rich, Melissa Rich, Alexis McGill (Jack), Andrew Harrell (Lydia), Kelly Harrell, Katie Cambron (Taylor), Mary Alyson Touloupas, Elizabeth Touloupas, John Touloupas II, Alexandra Touloupas, Victoria Touloupas, Michael Touloupas Jr., Stephanie Touloupas; two great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Jackson Fields and one on the way.
A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at Rich and Thompson Funeral Service in Burlington on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013. A Trisagion service will be celebrated at 7 p m.
The funeral service will be Monday, Aug. 5 at 1 p.m. at the Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church in Greensboro. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery in Burlington. At other times the family will receive friends at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church, 800 Westridge Road, Greensboro, NC 27410, Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, 918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215, or to St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox, 2150 West Front Street Burlington, NC 27215.
