BURLINGTON - Lamar Cecil Meeks Jr., 84, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at the Hospice Home after a short illness. He was born in St. Petersburg, Fla., and was the husband of 62 years to Joyce Ellen Dooley Meeks, who survives.
Lamar was a retired Church of Christ Minister, serving for more than 30 years. He was a consultant for his sons' company DWM, Inc., until his death. Lamar was a member of Mebane Street Church of Christ where he ministered as needed. Lamar was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. He had his pilot's license and he loved to fly. Lamar was an avid reader and craftsman. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce D. Meeks of the home; daughters, Kathy Hamilton and her husband, Nick, of Little Rock, Ark.; sons, James Lamar Meeks and his wife, Vickie, of Daytona Beach, Fla., David William Meeks and his wife, Lila, of Albany, N.Y., and Paul Edward Meeks and his wife, Luann, of Albany, N.Y.; grandchildren, Rachel (Matt) Wilson, Sharon (Stewart) Deere, Erin (Steve) Wagganer, Jamie Meeks, Katie (Brian) Whitt, Kristen (Mark) Sullivan, Kellie Meeks and Jordan Meeks; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Aline Shea and her husband, Ted, of Florida; brother, Carl Meeks of Nashville, Tenn.; and sister-in-law, Becky Smith of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lamar Cecil Meeks Sr. and Thelma Iona Barnes Meeks; and a brother, James Meeks.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Nick Hamilton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at the funeral home and other times at the home. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, at the Whitesell Cemetery in Lewisburg, Tenn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
