Larry Johnson Obituary

GRAHAM - Mr. Larry Parker Johnson, 72, of Graham died at Alamance Regional Medical Center on Thursday, March 19, 2015, at 6:36 a.m.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Henry Parker Johnson and Myrtle Lucille Liles Johnson, both deceased. He was a graduate of Southern High School, Class of 1963. Larry worked for 13 years at Newport News Shipbuilding as a senior illustrator and in 1981, he left the shipyard to become a full-time artist. Most of his artwork depicted the coast, local scenes and surrounding areas, nostalgia yesteryear and hotrods. He was a nationally award winning artist. His paintings can be found locally in numerous businesses. Larry built 10 pre-1948 street rods and was a lifetime member of the Tidewater Street Rod Association in Virginia. He was also a collector of fine junk and a collector of friends. He loved each and every one of them.
Survivors include a daughter, Stacey Hines and husband Scott; granddaughter, Sarah Hines; sister, June Gayle Rogers and husband Johnny; and brother, Douglas Wayne Johnson.
A memorial service will be conducted at Bible Baptist Church on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at 3 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall of the church. Other times the family will be at his residence. A group of local street rods will meet at the Graham funeral home at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday to proceed with the family to the church in honor of his memory.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rich and Thompson Funeral Service, Inc., P.O. Box 658, Burlington, NC 27216 to assist with funeral expenses.
Rich & Thompson Funeral Home and Crematory in Graham is assisting the family with arrangements.

I have a picture of Larry in my shop. I think of his great personality every time I see it. My hallway is lined with his art & several originals he did for me in the 70´s. We spent some good times at swap meets & rod runs. Larry was a special person to all that knew him. RIP

Hard to believe it's been 4 years Larry. I pass by your house every day thinking you should be on that porch with a glass of sweet tea and a tomato sandwich. I walk by your art every day here in my house. Although we miss you, you will never die as long as we have those precious memories to cherish!!

Miss you, Larry. Will spend the anniversary of your passing at Carolina Beach, putting flowers on the pier, as I have every year. Time has not made this hurt less. You were the love of my life, and no one will ever take your place. I will love you forever, and look forward to the day when I see you again. Amy

I met Larry some years ago through my sister. He was a great artist. We would always see him at the Craft show and he was always gracious in telling the history of his pieces, reminding us us of how times back then were so easygoing and simple. And I would see him at the antique auctions, driving his antique cars. You will be missed greatly Larry, and I'm proud to have known you,and I have three pieces of your work hanging on my walls. Rest easy.....

Larry's art work hangs proudly in my home and in my hotrod garage. They continue to be a reminder to me as his friend and as always his smiling face to see especially when we stopped to say "hey" while on our annual hotrod drives from the Tidewater area to the car shows in Charlotte .

Thank you Larry, for the best (almost,4/20/15) 8 years of my life. Through it all,you remain the kindest, funniest, most gentle soul I will ever be privileged to have known. I will always love you, always have. You were responsible for some of the most cherished memories I will ever have, and I know that I will never know another man who could come close to what you have been to me. Your artwork was a true gift from God,and I am honored that you shared that vision with me and so many others. This pain is overwhelming, but at least yours is over, and you are,I have no doubt, sitting around somewhere with a cup of coffee or a glass of sweet tea (lemon AND ice), talking endlessly and entertaining anyone within earshot. I am a better person for having known and loved you.Rest well, and know that you were a source of joy and peace in my often chaotic existence. You were my sunshine, too.

Thank you, Larry, for our long friendship, a bit stormy at times, but true to the end. You filled me with much laughter (sometimes a little profane), shared with me the love of old, low, fast, loud cars (and big fat & red ones), of animals of all kinds (except snakes, of course), of so many fine and lasting friends, of all art however it emerged, of the natural world in its glorious and terrible beauty.
Thank you for making everyone you knew much larger than life in the tales and myths you spun of them (some almost true, I think), and for the odd nicknames you gave your friends, for sharing your home and shop and tools with me, and for inspiring me to tackle the '32 Ford I got into, as you said, 'way too deep' but will caress and curse probably until I follow you into the great unknown.
Rest well, LP, you have lived a full and rich life, and leave an ocean of gratitude and respect in we who remain here, for a while yet, missing you but with you still, in spirit and in love.
