LENOIR, N.C. - God, in His divine love, grace, and mercy, called Mardrey Mae Corpening Banner from her earthly house to His heavenly home on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012 at White Oak Manor in Burlington, N.C. after an extended illness.
The funeral for Mrs. Banner will be at noon Friday, Nov. 23, 2012 at Hood's Chapel United Church of God Inc. with final disposition in Blue Ridge Memorial Park. Bishop Philmore Hester will conduct the service.
Mardrey was the oldest of nine children. She was born on Jan. 28, 1926 to the late Ira Webster and Mary Elizabeth Corpening. Mardrey was educated in the Burke County School System. She was employed by Greer Laboratory for approximately 23 years.
On Oct. 18, 1947, Mardrey Mae Corpening was united in marriage to the late Louis Edward Banner. To this union five children were born. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Longeon and LaFayette and one daughter Joan, who died at birth. In addition, two brothers, Odell and Bill Corpening and one sister, Arnell Thomas preceded her in death.
Before her health started failing, Mardrey Banner was a faithful, dedicated, active and loyal member at Hood's Chapel United Church of God. She served as a Sunday school teacher, member of the senior choir, member of the usher board, member of the mother's board and served as treasurer of the missionary department. Even though she worked very hard in these departments, she felt her calling was to help the youth. For over 30 years she served as president of the Y.P.H.A. (Young Peoples' Holiness Association).
Loving survivors remaining to cherish her memory are one son, Ronnie Edward Banner Sr. (Bessie Ann); one daughter, Linda Banner Curry (Bernard); three grandchildren, Chastity Banner, Ronnie Edward Banner Jr. and Leeya Winstead (Anthony); four stepgrandchildren, Antionette Kirkland (Maurice); Kimmie Michaux, Tyra Horton, and Erica Bailey; four sisters, Hazel Evans, Laura Gilliam both of Morganton, N.C., Shirleen Patterson of Granite Falls, N.C. and Priscilla Evans of Greensboro, N.C.; one brother Ted Corpening (Genevia) of Morganton, N.C.; one special aunt, Aquilla Wakefield of Atlanta, Georgia, and a special nephew Donald Banner and special cousin, Carrie Hood, who were very instrumental in looking after her; seven great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Ida Banner and Rosie Corpening, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, neighbors, and friends. She will also be fondly remembered by her Hood's Chapel United Church of God family.
Family visitation will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2012 at Hood's Chapel.
