COLUMBIA, S.C. - Memorial services for Marguerite Nicholson Garner, 93, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home, Burlington, N.C. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. prior to the service.
Mrs. Garner died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at 93.
Born in Burlington, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Robert Jerome Nicholson and Zella Artitia Jobe. She lived in the Burlington area from birth to age 85 when she moved to Columbia, S.C., to live with her daughter. Mrs. Garner was a member and active volunteer of Davis Street United Methodist Church, Burlington, N.C. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and in retirement was a member of Western Electric's service group, The Pioneers, winning numerous ribbons for her needlework at their annual conventions.
Surviving are her daughter, Mary Ann Odom of Edisto Island, S.C.; granddaughter, Julia Cate of Columbia; great-grandchildren, William, Eliza and John David; sister, Jeanette Joyce of Liberty, N.C.; sister-in-law, Martha Hewitt of Elon, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families in North Carolina.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Luther George Garner; and grandson, David Odom.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Davis Street United Methodist Church or The David Odom Scholarship at the University of South Carolina.
Mrs. Garner's picture is from 1942, as a newlywed, happily receiving a letter from "Shike" (Luther George Garner Jr.) while he was serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
