Richard Wayne Bullard Sr. was born March 30, 1937, in Durham County, the son of William Oscar and Ruth Breeze Bullard. He attended Monroe High School and Wingate Jr. College High School and graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College in 1961. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1958.

He resided in Durham from 1961 to 2005, and Ashe County and Mebane from 2005 to present. He worked in the Research Triangle Park at Chemstrand, Union Carbide, Rhone-Poulenc and Bayer Crop Sciences.
An avid rockhound, Richard was past president of the Central N.C. Mineral Club and managed the Club's Gem & Mineral Show in Durham.
Richard is survived by his wife, Patsy Safrit Bullard, of China Grove; two sons, Richard W. Bullard Jr. and wife, Mary Helen, of Youngsville, and William L. Bullard and wife, Ann, of China Grove; and one daughter, Dawn Bullard Salvatore and husband, Benjamin, of Mebane; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Richard was a founding member of Christus Victor Lutheran Church, Research Triangle Park, where the service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 3 p.m. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Alamance Caswell or the North Carolina Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
