BURLINGTON - Mr. Robert Ray Hayes, 83, of Burlington, died at Alamance Regional Medical Center on Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at 1:55 a.m. following a lengthy illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Joyce Catlett Hayes, who survives and the son of Manley Calvin Hayes and Martha Friddle Hayes, both deceased. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict.
Robert was a graduate of Elon College and the UNC School of Law where he received his Doctorate of Jurisprudence. Mr. Hayes maintained a law practice in Alamance County for 53 years until his death. He was authorized to practice before the United States Supreme Court. Robert attended Grove Park Baptist Church. He had served as Governor of the Loyal Order of Moose.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include three daughters, Janice Hayes Griffin and husband Mike of Graham, Paula O. Spence of Manhattan, Kansas and Cynthia O. Clark of Burlington; three brothers, Harold G. Hayes and wife Myrna of Burlington, Doyle L. Hayes and wife Johnsie of Reidsville and Michael C. Hayes and wife Vicky of Burlington; granddaughter, Robin Spence Estrada and husband Eric of Nashville, Tenn.; grandson, CW2 Matthew D. Spence and Jennifer of Manhattan, Kansas; three great-grandchildren, Ava Spence, Noelle Spence and Austin Estrada; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Bill Vickrey. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Alamance Bar Association.
The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
