BURLINGTON - Ruby Thompson Cates, 90, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at The Hospice Home. She was born Aug. 12, 1922, in Alamance County to the late Edwin Herbert and Sarah May Thompson.
She had retired from Kayser-Roth Hosiery and later worked for Zayre. Ruby was a member of the First Baptist Church of Burlington and she had taught the first grade Sunday school for more than 40 years. She was once honored as the Alamance County Volunteer of the Year. She devoted her life to Christ and epitomized the "Golden Rule." With a heart of gold, Ruby Cates was always there for anyone who needed a helping hand.
Survivors include her daughters, Brenda Gardner of Murphy, N.C. and Connie Hart of Gibsonville; sons, Roger (Kathryn) Cates of Greensboro and Don Cates of Mocksville; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Wallace B. Cates; parents and siblings, C.W. "Snooks" Thompson, Inez Brown, N.R. "Jake" Thompson, Marshall Thompson and Kenneth "Bud" Thompson.
The funeral will be held at 4:00 PM Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at the First Baptist Church of Burlington by Dr. Terry Peele. Interment will follow in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Monday at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory Inc. and at other times at the residence.
