BURLINGTON - Mrs. Ruth Groarke of Burlington, N.C., passed away after an illness of several years duration.

She was a native of Stanton Island, N.Y. Ruth was a registered nurse at Alamance Regional Medical Center. She began her career as a nurse in the United States Army where she served as a first lieutenant stationed in Hawaii. She worked in various capacities as an R.N. through the many years of her career, from floor nursing to supervising.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ethel Swanson Groarke; and her father, Francis Groarke, both of Stanton Island, N.Y.
Ruth leaves behind a treasured and longtime friend from New Jersey, Ginger Oppenheimer, as well as a host of co-workers and dear friends who have faithfully loved and supported her through the years, and most especially during the many months of her recent illness.
Ruth was known to all in the community for her enthusiastic, fun and flamboyant personality. Ruth was a talented crochet artist and perfected true masterpieces of beauty and style, often giving her creations to special friends. She loved books, the arts, old movies, classical music, and had a passionate quest for knowledge.
Ruth consistently voiced her sincere respect and gratitude for the nurturing care she received from Dr. Gitten, his nurse Doni, and the entire staff of the ARMC Cancer Center. Ruth was a courageous warrior in her battle with cancer and she acknowledged her unending praise to God for all the miraculous blessings she had experienced in the midst of her intense disease process.
Friends will receive guests at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 29, 2013, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Ruth will be interred in Salisbury National Cemetery at a later date.
