GRAHAM - Mr. Walter H. Hanford Sr. (Walkie), 75, of Hanford Road, Graham, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012 at his home.

A life-long resident of Alamance County, Mr. Hanford was the husband of Diana L. Hanford, who survives, and the son of the late Edward R. Hanford Jr. and the late Ruth W. Hanford.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Hanford is survived by two sons, Walter H. Hanford Jr. and Andrew H. Hanford and his wife Marsha, all from Graham; and daughter, Andrea H. Taylor and husband Bernie of Burlington. Mr. Hanford was most proud and blessed with four grandchildren, Andrew H. Hanford II, Mary Holly Hanford, Madison L. Hanford and Mason B. Taylor; and two stepdaughters, Jennifer S. Newton and husband Scott and Mary Beth Massey. His sister, Pat Moser and husband Sam; and brother, James Hanford and his wife Donna, also survive.
Mr. Hanford grew up in Alamance County, working for his family at Hanford Brick Company and playing sports. During his athletic years, Mr. Hanford accomplished many personal achievements such as holding county football rushing and touchdown records. His teammates and peers greatly respected his fierce competitive ability. He eventually left Alamance County to play tailback at East Carolina where he lettered each of his four years playing football. He graduated college with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business-Education and Social Studies.
Mr. Hanford returned home to Alamance County and began teaching and coaching at Haw River Elementary before transferring to Southern Alamance High School. While at Southern, he coached all sports including football, wrestling, basketball, track and golf. His many coaching accomplishments include being named Mid-State Coach of the Year from 1966-1972 in football and coaching his two sons to state championships in the same year (1979), one son to an individual state wrestling championship and the other to a state midget-league football championship. In 1994, supporters of Southern High School honored Mr. Hanford's dedication and devotion to its youth for 30 years of athletics and education by naming the football complex ""The Walter H. Hanford Stadium.""
A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at Davis Street United Methodist Church on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Walter Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
A visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 23, 2012 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Rich and Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington, N.C. The family will be at the residence at other times.
