Walter H. (Wally) Hanford Jr. of Hanford Road, Graham, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, at Kerr Lake in Clarksville, Va.

A native of Alamance County, Wally was the son of Jane Chandler Webb of Elon and the late Walter H. Hanford Sr. of Graham. He is also survived by one daughter, Mary Holly Hanford, of Burlington; a brother, Andrew Hanford and his wife Marsha of Graham; and a sister, Andrea H. Taylor and her husband Bernie, of Graham. Wally was blessed with two nephews, Drew Hanford and Mason Taylor; a niece, Madison Hanford; a stepfather, Joseph Webb of Elon; a stepmother, Diana Hanford, of Burlington; two stepsisters, Jennifer Newton and Mary Beth Massey, both of Burlington; and many close aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
In addition to his father, Wally was preceded in death by a stepbrother, Joseph B. Webb.
He was employed with Mass Mutual Financial Group in Greensboro, N.C. and he was a member of St. Mark's Church in Burlington, N.C.
Wally grew up playing sports, most notably football and wrestling. His dedication and hard work in sports culminated in his most accomplished achievement when he won the individual 108-lb. State Wrestling Championship in 1979 under the coaching of his father.
The love of Wally's life was his daughter Holly. He also enjoyed the outdoors and had a passion for fishing. His caring nature, outgoing personality and genuine smile helped him make friends everywhere.
A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at St. Mark's Church, Burlington, N.C. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Bob Disher will officiate.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rich and Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington, N.C. The family will be at the Webb residence in Elon at other times.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to Allied Churches to help those in need.
