BURLINGTON - Mrs. Brenda Sue Fortner Cates, 51, of 923 North Mebane Street, Burlington died at her residence on Monday, April 7, 2014 at 7:50 p.m.

A native of Galax, VA, she was the daughter of Thomas G. Fortner and Frances Nell Gallimore Fortner, both deceased.
Survivors include her sons, Terry L. Cates, Jr. and Joseph L. Cates, Sr. and wife Tiffany, all of Burlington and Christopher L. Martin of Hillsborough; step-son, William L. Cates of Burlington; boyfriend, E. Earl Barker of the home; grandchildren, Hannah G. Cates, Haylee B. Gaus, Joseph L. Cates, Jr., Jayden L. Cates, Kaitlyn N. Andrews, Madison L. Martin, Kirah Massey and MacKenzie K. Martin, all of Burlington; brothers, Jerry Fortner of Graham, Gene Fortner and wife Christina of Caswell County, Thomas "Junior" Fortner and David Fortner and wife Penny, all of Burlington; sisters, Judy Mansfield and husband Cletus of Graham, Patricia Murray and Barbara Helton, both of Burlington; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by infant twins, Norman and Dean Martin; brother, Roger Lee Fortner; and brothers-in-law, Johnny Murray and Alan Helton.
The funeral service will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Graham on Monday, April 14, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. by the Rev. Gene Cates with the family receiving friends from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.
