Shirley Joyce Fricke Atkinson, 87, passed away quietly at home on Friday, May 30, following a courageous three and a half month battle with cancer. Shirley was born in Joliet, Illinois on October 2, 1926, the daughter of George Russell and Inez Rose Fricke. She was an expert homemaker and seamstress.  A resident of Winston-Salem since 1976, Shirley was a member of the women's sorority Beta Sigma Phi for over 60 years, often serving in leadership positions.  She was a longtime volunteer at Forsyth Memorial Hospital and was an active member of Parkway Presbyterian Church.  Shirley spent most of her formative years in Richmond, Virginia and graduated from Manchester High School in 1943.  She and Tuck were married there in 1946, shortly after his return from submariner service in the Pacific during World War II. She worked as bank teller while Tuck attended North Carolina State University, and then devoted her life to making a wonderful home and raising their children. Her greatest pleasure came from seeing the success of her three professional and accomplished sons.  All three sons and daughters-in-law played compassionate and caring roles in supporting her through her illness.
Shirley was preceded in passing by her beloved husband of 55 years, Tuck King Atkinson Sr., daughter Dawn Carol Atkinson, her parents, and brothers Lawrence Layton and Robert Donald Fricke.  She is survived by three sons and their wives:  Tuck King Atkinson, Jr. and wife Sandra Todd-Atkinson of Pompano Beach, Florida; John Russell Atkinson and wife Dianne McAllister Atkinson of DeBary, Florida; and Brian Thomas Atkinson and wife Jenkie Gardner Atkinson of Charlotte; sister Nancy Fricke Coxon and her husband Robert Coxon of Cumberland, Virginia, eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 3 at 11:00 AM at Parkway Presbyterian Church. Graveside services will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery in Burlington, at 1:30pm where Shirley will be laid to rest alongside Tuck, Sr. and Dawn.  The family will receive friends at Salem Funeral Home on Reynolda Road in Winston-Salem at 6:30 on Monday evening.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Center of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County.
