BURLINGTON - Gene William Davis, 90, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, July 20, 2014.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 23, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Rich & Thompson Funeral Home, 306 Glenwood Avenue, Burlington. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 24, at the Rich & Thompson Chapel. Burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ingrid Hilsberg Davis, son Marvin Davis and wife Debbie of Asheville, daughter Monica and husband Ted Cheresnowsky of Greensboro, son Martin and wife Karen of Harpers Ferry, W. Va. seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Gene was born October 31, 1923, in Greenville, SC, the son of John Lindsey Davis and Effie Laws Davis. After graduating from Orangeburg High School with honors, he attended Berry College and entered World War II service as an aviation cadet later serving in the 101st Airborne Division called to action in Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge. He completed service as a member of the Occupational Force guarding General Eisenhower in Berlin where he met Ingrid.
In 1947, Gene and Ingrid settled in Burlington where he worked as an engineer for Southern Bell/AT&T until his retirement and participated in the Telephone Pioneers volunteer organization. He valued serving his church, Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church, as the audio engineer for Sunday Service radio broadcasts and library audio/visual coordinator. He and Ingrid enjoyed dancing with the Foot & Fiddle Square Dance Club for many years.
