BURLINGTON - Mr. John T. Gurkin Jr., 89, of 3124 Rock Hill Road, died at the Hospice Home on Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, at 1:33 a.m. following several years of failing health.

A native of Beaufort, N.C., he was the husband of 66 years to Emily Moser Gurkin, who survives, and the son of John Taylor Gurkin Sr. and Katie Hassell Gurkin, both deceased. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. John retired with 49 years of service with Kayser-Roth as a manager and supervisor for the maintenance department. He was a member of Andrews Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include a son, Mr. Joseph Taylor Gurkin and wife Mitzi of Greensboro; daughter, Mrs. Cheryl Gurkin Durham and husband Rickey of Burlington; sister, Mrs. Naomi Gurkin Lilley of Swansboro, N.C.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three great-stepgrandchildren; and one great-great-stepgrandchild.
He was preceded in death by his son, John Gerry Gurkin; three sisters and one brother.
The funeral service will be conducted in the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Larry Lamberth and Dr. Tommy Willis. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. At other times they will be at the residence.
