BURLINGTON - Mr. Walter H. Gardner, 90, of 3727 Wade Coble Drive, Burlington died at Alamance Regional Medical Center on Friday, March 15, 2013 at 3:30 p.m.
Walt was born in 1923 to Herbert and Ida Ruth Gardner in Sac City, Iowa, the youngest of seven children. In 1944 he married the late Eileen Burgess of Des Moines, Iowa. Walt served in the USAF for four years in World War II, as a pilot and co-pilot. Some of that time was spent in England, where he served as co-pilot on several missions over Germany and France. He remained active as a private pilot for much of his adult life. Education and church involvement were important parts of his life, and Walt always enjoyed a good round of golf with friends. At various times, he worked for Farm Bureau in Iowa, for farm equipment manufacturing companies, and at retirement owned an equipment rental business in Sanford, Pa. Upon retirement, he and Eileen moved to Sanford, N.C., and subsequently to Twin Lakes Community, Burlington, N.C. in 2003, where he remained active until death.
Survivors include his son, Edgar Gardner and wife Linda of Rochester, NY; two daughters, Nancy Miller and husband Bill of Fayetteville, Ark., and Libby Gardner-McBride and wife Melissa of Oakland, Cal.; seven grandchildren, Ian, Kevin, Christine, Graham, Julia, Olivia and Sammie; one great-grandchild, Liam; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at the Foley Chapel at Twin Lakes Community on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at 2:0 p.m., by the Rev. Genie Martin.
