GILBERT, Ariz. - Mr. Donald Mebane, 64, passed away Nov. 26, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer.
A native of Alamance County, N.C., he was the son of Mrs. Beulah Shipman-Mebane of Burlington and the late Robert Odell Mebane and the husband of Mrs. Sharon Kay Mebane of Gilbert, Ariz.
He was a 1967 graduate of Central High School in Graham and a 1971 graduate of Winston-Salem State University.
His post college job was in Atlanta, Ga. as a trainer for Church's Chicken. This was followed by 22 years of employment as a production supervisor for Delco Remy, a division of General Motors in Anderson, Ind. and Meridian, Miss. In Anderson, Ind. he was a member of the Masonic Lodge-Peerless #332, Prince Hall affiliate. He worked the next eight years for the air bag division of TRW as production supervisor and Human Resource Representative in Gilbert, Ariz. He also worked eight years in gaming and non-gaming positions at Harrah's AK-Chin Casino in Maricopa, Ariz.
In addition to his mother and his wife, he is survived by a stepson, William (Kai) Youngblood of Mesa, Ariz.; stepdaughter, Lisa K. Johnson of Meridian, Miss.; sisters, Elois Key and Gwenevere (Ricky) Miles, both of Atlanta; granddaughters, Mariah and Jazmin Youngblood; great-granddaughters, LaShiya and Kiana Scott; nephew, Richard Franklin Key; and nieces, Mebane Kanita Key and Nzingha Mebane-Canty.
Along with other family and many friends, he leaves three best friends, George (Ruthie) Packengham of Cary, N.C., the Rev. Anthony (Joyce) Harris of Anderson, Ind. and cousin, Maxine Shipman (Elvin) Matthews of Alto Loma, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his father; brother, Dewitt Franklin Mebane; sister, Kay Frances Mebane; his Shipman and Mebane grandparents; and a beloved grandson, Cedric Scott Jr. (Lisa's son).
The funeral will be held Dec. 5, 2013, at noon at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home. The family visitation will be one hour before the service.
Public viewing will be from 4 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home on Dec. 4, 2013.
