GREENSBORO - Holly Jo Closson Lumley died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, from lung cancer while resting comfortably at Beacon House in Greensboro, N.C.
The family will receive friends Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Forbis and Dick Guilford Chapel.
Holly was born on Feb. 2, 1956, in Manistee, Mich., to Max and Faith Closson. She attended Manistee High School where she earned academic awards, was a cheerleader and was named All-Conference and All-District for skiing. She was a foreign exchange student in Germany the summer between high school and college in 1973. She attended Michigan State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture in 1978.
Holly married Michael Lumley on Oct. 20, 1979, in Manistee, Mich., and she was employed for 30 years at LabCorp. While there, she earned the Employee of the Year Award.
Holly liked to play tennis (won several city titles and one State Championship), crochet, read books, garden, spend time in her greenhouse, follow her two sons on their sporting and academic adventures in high school and enjoyed participating in their college experiences. She was a prolific skier and won the 1987 National Amateur Ski Association Championship in Colorado with her good friend Mary Beth Ebert. Holly liked to work with crafts and attended many fairs while displaying and selling her creations. She enjoyed traveling to several locations throughout the United States and the world. Holly loved wildlife and animals, especially cats.
Holly is survived by her husband, Michael Lumley; and two sons, Andrew and Tyler Lumley. Other surviving family members include her mother-in-law, Hazel Lumley; Phil and Mary Lumley, Pat and Vicki Lumley, Sue Lumley; nieces and nephews, Niki and George Kosinski, Samantha and Sarah Lumley, Nate Lumley; and great-nieces and nephews, Laini and Nash Kosinski, Ben and Ana Lumley and Felina and Gabby Lumley.
Memorial donations may be made to the North Carolina Kidney Foundation, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157.
