Bessie M. Gaines

On September 19, 1910, Bessie Mae Lee was born to Richard and Matilda Lee of Bunkie, Louisiana. She was the first child of three siblings. Her grandparents on her mother's side were Mose and Martha Manson. Bessie has many nicknames; some of the family favorites are Killa, Bessie the Devil, and Messy Bessie. She attended Rosenwald High School in Rapides Parish, Glenmora, Louisiana.

Bessie Lee met and married the love of her life Mr. George C. Gaines on July 1, 1932. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined First Union Baptist Church in Glenmora where she served as a Steward and Missionary under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Emeritus C. L. Smith and Reverend Theodore Simon. She faithfully served as the Mother of the Church under the leadership of Reverend Gregory Craig until her health failed.

In her most recent years, she was blessed to have extended family and friends in Houston, Texas where she attended True Vine Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Steve Morgan. She enjoyed prayer and special moments with her "carport" companions that gathered frequently at her daughter's home in Houston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Matilda Lee, Husband George C. Gaines, Brother Eddie E. Baker, Sr., Sister Mattie Mackey, Daughter Thetta Athanase, and Nephew Roland O. Baker.

She leaves to cherish her memory; two Daughters: Billie F. Harrison (Jerry) and Garbo J. Jett (Allen K. -deceased); one Grandson: Allen P. Jett (Elise); three God Daughters: Emma Ruth Anderson, Ester Lee Bolts and Renea Austin Duffin; Nephews: Ernest "Joe Louis" Mackey, Sr. (Jean), Roy Lee Mackey (Bertha), Jerry Manson, Edmond L. Baker, Sr. (Rebecca), Eddie E. Baker Jr. (Joyce), Rynnie E. Baker (Sonya), Colonel L. Baker (Jean), John W. Baker (Linda), Eric Baker Sr. (Janice), and Dedric Baker (Latasha), Guy P. Anderson; Nieces: Helen M. Green (Patrick), Jolean Manson, Mary E. Simon (Arnold), Sandra Hooker (Vonell), Noreen Baker, Clara B. Ford, Emma Ruth Anderson, Terry D. Anderson, Marilyn R. Barnes (Benny), Donna E. Moss (Rodney), Mariam L. Cage and a host of great nieces and great nephews, other relatives, friends and church family.

Visitation (Saturday) March 23, 2013 from 9-10:55 a.m. with Funeral Services at 11:00 a.m., both services will be held at The First Union Baptist Church in Glenmora, La., with Rev. Gregory Craig, Officiating, Interment Glenmora Cemetery.
