Funeral services celebrating the life of Billy Ray Vercher will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, March 20, 2014, in The Chapel of Hixson Brothers, Alexandria with Reverend Bruce Maxey officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family asks that visitation be observed Wednesday at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and resume Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until time of service.

Billy Ray, 81, of Alexandria, passed from this life on Monday, March 17, 2014, at his residence.

He served in the National Guard stateside during the Korean War as a medic. "Sport" as he was known by his co-workers, worked for South Central Bell for 31 years, working his way up the ranks and retiring as a telephone test technician in 1981.

Billy Ray loved sports, dancing and the company of friends and family. He always had a joke to tell.

He is preceded in death by his father, Nick Vercher and mother, Mattie Oliphant; grandparents, Eley and Antoinette Carter and his aunt and uncle, James and Sally Carter.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Tracy Vercher; daughter, Michelle Hyatt and husband, Darin; grandchildren, Alaina Vercher and Malia Hyatt; sisters, Antoinette Barrett and Olivia Chanbley and aunt, Dovie Testa.
