A Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Emma Smith Vermaelen will be celebrated at 10:30 on Friday November 16, 2012 at St. Frances Cabrini Church with Father Dan O'Connor and Father Shouraiah Ramji officiating. Interment will follow in Alexandria Memorial Gardens, Woodworth, under the direction of John Kramer & Son.

Mrs. Emma Smith Vermaelen , age 95, of Alexandria passed away Tuesday November 13, 2012, at Matthews Memorial Health Care.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years James Louis Vermaelen Sr.; her parents Frank and Caroline Poye Smith; her brothers Frank Smith, Phillip Smith, Joseph Smith and Louis Smith; her sister Rosa Smith; one great grandchild Mary Therese', and one son in law Andre' D. Coco.

Mrs. Emma was a charter member of St. Frances Cabrini Church. She had many titles over the years, homemaker, seamstress, LPN, but most of all she was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and to many others "Granny".

She is survived by her sister Marie Smith; her children Emma Louise and Merlin Wadsworth of Tampa, Florida, Rita Marie Coco of Marksville, James Louis Jr. and Cheryl Vermaelen of Baton Rouge, Rose Mary and Rickey Roberts of Alexandria, Carole Anne and Barry Moore of Newark, Texas, Michael Anthony and Diane (Scotti) Vermaelen of Baton Rouge.

She is also survived by her grandchildren Mary and Steve Williamson, David and Christine Wadsworth, Steven and Angela Wadsworth, Dr. Christopher Wadsworth, Celeste Coco- Ewing and Dr. Thomas Ewing, Monique and Richard McCall, Emily and Joseph Ozog, Dr. Dominique Coco and Jessica Starr, Jamie and Jason Riley, Claire Vermaelen, Dr. James Vermaelen III and Ashlie, Rebecca and Matt Gorshe, Randi and Steven Roberts, Rey Roberts and friend Jennifer Charlie, Gabriel and Staci Moore, Abby and Paul Lattanzio, Nick Moore and Jennifer Henderson, Michael Vermaelen Jr., Jason Vermaelen, Daniel Vermaelen and Allie Pierce, Travis Vermaelen, and Nicole Vermaelen.

Also, her great grandchildren Aleks Williamson, Matt, Daniel, Katie and Erin Wadsworth, Addison and Michael Wadsworth, Annabel and Martha Ewing, Eleanor and Mac McCall, Katie, Sarah and Samuel Ozog, Ben and Luke Coco, Madeline Ballew, Jacob and James Riley, Emma Rose Roberts, Dominic and Gloria Lattanzio, Lincoln, Lawson and Jillian Moore.

Pallbearers serving will be Michael Vermaelen, Rey Roberts, Gabriel Moore, Rebecca Gorshe, Daniel Vermaelen, David Wadsworth, Steven Wadsworth, Jason Vermaelen and Drs. James Vermaelen III and Dominque Coco.

Visitation will be held Thursday November 15, 2012 at John Kramer and Son, Alexandria from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and from 8:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. Friday. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

The family requests memorials be made to the National Down Syndrome Society at 666 Broadway, 8th Floor New York, NY 10012 or in honor of Mrs. Emma Smith Vermaelen.
