Richard Lee Larsen
Richard Lee Larsen, 83, of Alexandria, Louisiana and formerly of Houston, Texas, died Friday January 11, 2013.
The son of Gertrude Halpin Larsen Jones and William B. Larsen, Sr., Dick was born May 15, 1929 in Lake Charles, Louisiana and moved to Houston shortly thereafter. He was raised in Houston where he attended Lamar High School. Dick was awarded an appointment to the United States Naval Academy where he graduated in 1952. As a decorated officer, he enjoyed a varied career that included commanding the destroyer USS Mansfield in combat, acting as an aide to Admiral Anderson at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and teaching military history at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
After retiring from the Navy, Dick worked as an executive for Brown and Root in Houston and Tehran, Iran. Later, he became the Director of Public Works for the City of Bellaire, Texas until his retirement in 2005.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nadine Haas Larsen, and his children, Kristina Larsen McBride and husband, Tom of Alexandria; Rebecca Larsen Warren of Alexandria; Richard Dean Larsen and wife, Susana of Shreveport, Louisiana; and Gretchen Larsen Godbee and husband John of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His grandchildren are: Lesley Elizabeth Warren, Shreveport; Emily Ann Warren, Alexandria; Larsen Watts McBride, Gainesville, Florida; Alexandra Elizabeth Larsen, Shreveport; Rebecca Ann McBride, Alexandria; and Nicholas Alfredo Larsen, Shreveport.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William B. Larsen, Jr.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at St. James Episcopal Church, Alexandria with The Very Reverend Fred Tinsley officiating. A visitation will be held in the Parish Hall from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 1620 Murray Street, Alexandria, LA 71301.
