Velva J. Powell
Velva Mae Jarrell Powell was born in Knight, Louisiana on March 26, 1924. She graduated from Evans High School in 1941 and attended Louisiana College. On September 30, 1944, she married Louie C. Powell of Hineston, where they lived until 1984, when they moved to Alexandria.
Through the years, Velva was very active in church activities both at the Camp Eight United Pentecostal Church in Otis, Louisiana, and, since 1984, at The Pentecostals of Alexandria. She worked for the U. S. Postal Service in Long Leaf, Louisiana and also taught school. In 1959, she became a stay-at-home Mom. She and her husband enjoyed camping and RV trips, traveling extensively in the United States.
Having been found faithful, on November 26, 2012, at the age of 88 years, Velva's long and winding road turned to gold. The corruptible put on incorruption; the mortal put on immortality. Those who preceded her in death were waiting just inside the Eastern Gate: her parents, Grady and Ola Sales Jarrell; her brother, Reverend Vernie Lee Jarrell; and her sister, Alverie Jarrell Golemon.
Mourning her passing are her husband of 68 years, Louie C. Powell; her son, Ronald Louie Powell and his wife, Karen Diane Long Powell; and her granddaughter, Kelsey Delaine Powell. She will also be deeply missed by many nieces and nephews, friends, and her beloved church family.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 3, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. at The Pentecostals of Alexandria and will include remarks and tributes from: Otha L. Powell, George L.
