Mary McCrory Hamilton
She died at home, at 3:15 p.m. on October 19, 2013, surrounded by her immediate family. She was 66 and a resident of Lafayette. She is survived by her husband, Willard Dotson Hamilton; her daughter, Katherine Craven Lee of Lafayette; her stepdaughter, Rosemary Hamilton Sweeney and husband Joseph of Richmond, Virginia; and her grandchildren, Jackson McCrory Lee, Anna Elizabeth Lee, and Taylor Grace Sweeney. Also survived by her mother, Martha Eisler McCrory; her sister, Ann Bullion McCrory; and her niece, Susan McCrory Doherty, all of Baton Rouge; and her nephew Thomas McCrory Doherty, his wife Robin and their son Owen, of Atlanta, GA. She was preceded in death by her father, Eugene Reynold McCrory, her daughter, Elizabeth Stewart Craven, and her nephew, Brian McCrory Doherty.
Mary was a 1965 graduate of Lee High School in Baton Rouge, and a 1968 graduate of the University of Alabama. She spent much of her adult life as a resident of Alexandria, Louisiana where she was the Director of St. James Episcopal Day School and later, a Spanish teacher at Pineville High School. At midlife she changed careers, and graduated from LSU Law School in 1991. After graduating, she served as a law clerk for U.S. District Court Judge James Trimble in Lake Charles. In 1992 she joined the law firm of Voorhies and Labbe in Lafayette, where she later became a partner. In spite of her cancer and the aggressive treatment, Mary continued to practice law on a daily basis, until late August of this year.
She was a member of Tri Delta sorority, and of the Junior League of New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Alexandria, and Lafayette. She was also a member of the American Bar Association, the Louisiana State Bar Association, Lafayette Parish Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, the American Inns of Court, and the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel.
Mary will be remembered for her dry sense of humor, her loyalty to family and friends, her tenacity, and her love of animals. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Lafayette Animal Aid or any animal welfare organization, or to the
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 21, at Martin and Castille Funeral Home, DOWNTOWN Lafayette location (330 St. Landry St.). A Service of Burial will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, at The Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 1030 Johnston Street in Lafayette. The Reverend Joseph Daly, the Reverend Elizabeth Rogers Ratcliff, the Reverend Dr. Duane Petersen, and the Reverend Richard Easterling will serve. Interment and graveside service will be at Roselawn Memorial Park, 4045 North St., in Baton Rouge, at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 23.
The family is grateful for the loving care given by Dr. Karen Roden, Rose Lilly, Dru Griffin, and Lana Babineaux. A special thanks is given to Mary's best friend, Janet Gates Ahrens, for her steadfast presence and care.
