Irble Gordey Obituary

Irble Inez Smith Gordey

Irble Inez Smith Gordey, 90, of Lumberton, Texas, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 16, 2017. She was born on June 14, 1926, to Alma Sarah Bonnette Smith and Andrew Jackson Smith, in Forest Hill, Louisiana.

Mom and Dad were Charter Members of Asbury Methodist Church before transferring membership to Forest Park United Methodist Church. Mom was a longtime member there teaching Sunday school, quilting, choir, United Methodist Women, and working with the Thrift Shop.

Our Mom retired from BISD in 1994 leaving behind a passion of hers, books. She was an avid reader and crossword puzzle worker. She loved playing in the dirt and had a fabulous year-round garden.

Pretty sure our Mom would say she had a wonderful life. Daddy probably knows she is coming, so he can make amends for that front porch he never built her. Mom, may your lost memories pour out freely now and make you wonderfully content.

Survivors include her children, Beverly Gordey Sikes and her husband, Don, of Lumberton, Texas; Molly Gordey Sewell and her husband, Rusty, of Beaumont, Texas; Mark Douglas Gordey and his wife, Lillie, of Bridge City, Texas; and Julie Gordey Wesseling and her husband, Danny, of Ridgway, Colorado; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Our Mom is preceded in death by her husband and our father, James Douglas Gordey; her grandson, Kyle Lane Sewell; and her brothers, Rufus Smith, Joe Smith, and D.C. Smith.

A gathering of Mrs. Gordey's family and friends will begin at 1:00 p.m. with her memorial service to follow at 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 22, 2017, at Forest Park United Methodist Church, 225 South Major Drive, Beaumont, Texas. An ennichment of her cremated body will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Beaumont. Her cremation arrangements were held through Broussard's Crematorium under the direction of Broussard's, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.

Memorial contributions to honor the life of Mom may be made to Forest Park United Methodist Church, 225 South Major Drive, Beaumont, Texas 77707; or the Alzheimer's Association National Office, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, Illinois 60601.

With heartfelt gratitude and gratefulness our family will never forget the sacrifices made by Don and Beverly. Mom had a safe loving place there-her every need met. Beyond generous care and concern, she considered it HOME. Pretty sure they both have very comfy clouds to float on in heaven…

Thank you to the staff and guidance from Kindred Hospice especially our nurse Kat Walters. And to aide, Carol McClendon…what a special person you are. We needed you and you found your way to our Mother. Most fabulous gift ever. Your kind hands and soft words we will never forget.

First, I apologize because I have no memories of Miss Irble but I would like to share memories of Mrs. Alma and Uncle Bud. Their home and her garden remain vivid in my mind. Mrs. Alma walked to Melder to the store and post office every day; Uncle Bud was bedfast. Mrs. Alma was just a wisp of a person, small but no doubt strong. This memory seems to be of a 10-year period; probably not that long. Miss Alma had a thriving garden. It was long, running alongside the road next to the house. The strawberries, oh the strawberries. I can still remember walking through the paths of that garden, avoiding the strawberries. Mrs. Alma seemed to come by our house every day bringing a paper sack full of vegetables; that could not possibly be so but it happened so often that it seems so. It seemed like there were built in shelves in Mrs. Alma's kitchen that were filled with canned vegetables and fruits. When I was 5 or 6, Mrs. Alma and Mrs. Mattie Rhame were my Sunday School teachers. They taught me the old Bible stories and I remember them so vividly. I still have on the shelf in my living room the big book of Bible stories they gave me. Mrs. Alma was a wonderful Christian, gentle and kind, giving. Mrs. Irble's life story sounds like an extension of Mrs. Alma but I know she was her own dear person. May this be of some comfort.

May 22, 2017

Our family is unable to attend but as a small child I remember visiting Uncle Bud and Aunt Alma and eating fresh strawberries from their garden. I remember that my sister Bobbye and brother-in-law Junior were close friends with Irble and Douglas and spent alot of time together. I'll always remember Irble's smile and kindness as a person. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time of loss.
