During World War II, he left LSU to voluntarily enlist in the United States Army and served with a B-24 bomber unit in England and Africa. After his military service, he settled in Sicily Island, married Barbara Jane Peck in 1946, and began his family business of farming, which he continued throughout his entire life. In 1956, Mr. Gilbert began a career of public service that would span twenty-six years with his election to the Catahoula Parish Police Jury, followed by three terms in the Louisiana Senate from 1960-1972, and one term in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1972-1976. Mr. Gilbert possessed a variety of broad interests that included membership in the LSU Athletic Foundation, Rotary International, American Legion, Farm Bureau, the National Wild Turkey Federation, and as a Freemason. Barbara, so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. You & your family are in my prayers. You & I were "roomies" that first summer semester at LSU. I have thought of you often over the years.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time. I remember visiting with Cousin Sonny while visiting at my Grandmother's house in Wisner. He was a fine man and will be missed by many. My Mother was so fond of him. I wish I could be at the funeral but will not be able to attend. Again, my husband and I are so sorry for your loss.

I remember Mr. Gilbert from my days as a page in the Louisiana Legislature.

He was always pleasant, and a great tipper.

Had to have been a great man for an 11 year old to remember him for half a century!

Condolences to the family.

I had the pleasure to serve with Sen. Gilbert when he was in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1972-1976 and remained his friend for the rest of his life. He was a true gentleman, a man of character and wisdom, and a person of good humor who brightened the room with his wit and uplifting comments. He had an incredible memory and loved to recount events that happened in the legislature long ago or growing up in North Louisiana. He gave the word "Senator" a good name. He will be greatly missed! Mr Sonny stood by his word & a handshake agreement with him was if it was written in stone. He most recently in the past decade had begun to interact with students from Sicily Island High School by helping them secure trips to Wasington DC & to the WW II Miseum in New Orlens, Me Sonny was a Southern gentlemen, one of the few left in his generation. He will be missed by many who called him their friend.
