Funeral services for Mr. Alex (Pionk) Leger, age 92, will be held in the Chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home in Marksville, La. at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 19 , 2013 with father Paul Kunnumpuram officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Garden Cemetery in Lafayette. Arrangements are under the direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Marksville.
A native of Bristol, La., and a resident of Marksville since 1955, he passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 4:15 p.m. Mr. Leger was the original owner of the (China Ball Club) in Bristol, Louisiana which was built in 1949. He moved to Marksville in 1955 and was a truck farmer growing sweet potatoes and watermelons until he retired in 2006. He was a member of the Louisiana Farm Bureau. He was the first King of the Marksville Mardi Gras Celebration in 1968. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Moncla, Lousiana.
He is survived by two sons, Merlin Leger and wife Joanne of Lafayette, RL Leger and wife Joyce of Baton Rouge, onebrother, Russell Leger of Marksville, six grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Narlin Castille Leger, one daughter, Patsy Ann Leger, parents, Albert Joseph Leger and Marie Marcelite Miller, five brothers, Rene (Gabee) Leger, Alcues (Ben) Leger, Easton Leger, Felecien (Blue) Leger and Harold (Coon) Leger, three sisters, Mercedes Leger Courville, Madeline Leger Cormier & Emmatile Leger Miller.
Pallbearers are Al Leger, Lance Leger, Michael Blake Leger, Ty Theriot, Keith Leger and Steve Dupuis. Honorary pallbearers are Brennan Ritchie, Steve Theriot and Wilbert Leger.
Visitation will be held in the Hixson Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Marksville from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Monday, March 18, 2013 with a wake service and rosary at 7:00 p.m. and will resume at 8:00 am Tuesday until shortly before time of services.
The family would like to extend a sincere thanks to All Saints Hospice. They would like to thank the staff at Rio Sol Nursing Home who took good care of him since May 2008. They would like to give a very special thank you to Al and Liz Leger for all the years of helping with Alex and his wife Narlin and especially since November 2007 when his wife went to Rio Sol and Alex in May 2008.
