Charles Clifford Verzwyvelt
A Mass of Christian Burial for Charles Clifford Verzwyvelt will be celebrated at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, June 25, 2013, in St. Francis Xavier Cathedral with Reverend James Ferguson officiating. Interment will follow in Alexandria Memorial Gardens under the direction of John Kramer & Son.
Mr. Verzwyvelt, 86, of Alexandria, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2013, at the VA Medical Center, Pineville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry James and Mary Etta Landry Verzwyvelt, a brother, Herbert J. Verzwyvelt, a sister, Annie Verzwyvelt, and a grandchild, Stacie Lynn Dove.
He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving on the USS Ticonderoga (CV-14). He retired from Union Pacific Railroad with 37 years service as a welder. He was a lifelong resident of Alexandria, and after retiring he spent much of his time fishing and gardening. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was well respected by his peers and he was a devout Christian.
Mr. Verzwyvelt is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley Mae Catha Verzwyvelt of Alexandria, one daughter, Cathy Dove of Pineville, two sisters, Pearl Hirchak and husband Tom, and Betty Jane LaCombe and husband Floyd, both of Alexandria, one brother, Daniel J. Verzwyvelt and wife Nancy of Biloxi, MS, two grandchildren, Jennifer Dove Birkhimer and husband Jason, and Alexis Johnson, and two great-grandchildren, Jada and Jayce Birkhimer.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday, June 24, 2012, and from 8:30 to 10:00 AM, Tuesday, June 25, 2012 at John Kramer & Son. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be offered 6:30 PM, Monday, June 24, 2012, in the chapel of John Kramer & Son.
