Frances Spengler Hargis, 88, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on December 29, 2012.
She was born in Alexandria, Louisiana, on September 1, 1924. She attended Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge, and graduated from Louisiana College with a Bachelor of Arts.
Mrs. Hargis was an active volunteer in her community. She was a lifelong member of St. James Episcopal Church. She was involved with the Alexandria Golf and Country Club, Junior League of Alexandria, Tri Delta Sorority, Rapides Symphony Orchestra Guild, Green Thumb Garden Club, and Deep South Garden Club. Mrs. Hargis hosted the first High Tea fundraiser for The Shepherd Center at the Thompson-Hargis House.
Mrs. Hargis will be remembered as a devoted wife and a loving mother and grandmother. Her family will forever remember her smile and laughter, her friendly, welcoming, and upbeat personality.
She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, B. Newton Hargis; her parents, Sylvester and Walterine Bailey Spengler; and her sister, Sylvia Spengler Crowell.
Mrs. Hargis is survived by her daughter, Susan Frances Hargis Douglas and her husband David, of Austin, Texas; son, Ben N. Hargis and wife Sheri, of Alexandria; grandchildren Benjamin N. Hargis, Jr. and wife Sarah, Tiffany Hargis Poore and husband Jeramie, Shelbi Hargis, Destin Douglas, and Frances Douglas; and two great grandchildren, Lila and Grayson Poore.
Funeral services celebrating the life of Frances Spengler Hargis will be at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 3, 2013 at St. James Episcopal Church with the Reverend Fred H. Tinsley officiating. Interment will be at Greenwood Memorial Park, under the direction of Hixson Brothers, Alexandria.
Pallbearers will be Ben N. Hargis, David Douglas, Destin Douglas, Jack Brame, William Barron, and Larry D. Smith. Honorary pallbearer will be Michael Kay.
