Randall Webb Obituary

Dr. Randall Joseph Webb

2 Corinthians 12:9-11

9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

Dr. Randall Joseph Webb, 72 years of age, was born in Natchitoches, LA to the late Joseph Wilburn Webb and Narvis Almand Webb on March 20, 1943. He lived a life of service. He was called from that life on November 18, 2015 at his home in Shreveport, LA. He was serving until the end. He found that serving others through education was his passion. As he always said, he was in the business of changing lives. He was a loving husband to his wife, Brenda, of 44 years. His love for his children and their families always brought him joy.

Dr. Webb was the longest-serving president in the history of Northwestern State; holding the position for 18 ½ years, from July 1, 1996 to Dec. 31, 2014. He was honored with the title of President Emeritus in May 2015. Northwestern State was the first public university in Louisiana to gain 100 percent accreditation of eligible academic programs and had the largest graduating classes in the university's history during Dr. Webb's tenure. He expanded the university's outreach by spearheading the development at NSU of the largest electronic education network of any university in Louisiana and oversaw the first two capital campaigns at NSU, which raised more than $65 million to enhance the university. He was named to the Southland Conference Hall of Honor earlier this year. He was a member of the Committee One Hundred in Shreveport, as well as a Rotary Member, formally in Natchitoches and later in Shreveport.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Webb of Shreveport, LA; his daughters, Tamara Gatewood and husband Reggie of McKinney, TX, and Lauren Simokaitis and husband Nick of Crestwood, MO; grandchildren, Tyler Joseph Gatewood, Ava Michelle Gatewood, Nicholas Adam Simokaitis, and Benjamin Webb Simokaitis; his mother-in-law, Louise Williams; and brother-in-law Joel Williams and wife Sylvia.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers include Sam Holland, Jimmy Berry, Chris Maggio, Greg Burke, Wayne McCullen, Robert Crew, Reggie Gatewood, and Nick Simokaitis. Honorary pallbearers include Dr. Randy Moffett, Jerry Pierce, Jimmy Long and his Monday lunch group, "The Gerousia".

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, November 23, 2015 at Prather Coliseum on the campus of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA with Senator Gerald Long and Rev. Thomas Rush officiating. A private family graveside will follow at a later time in the American Cemetery in Natchitoches, LA. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 22, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. in Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches, LA.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Dr. Randall and Brenda Webb Endowed Scholarship, Office of University Advancement, 535 University Parkway, Natchitoches, LA 71497.

I commented a few days earlier, but neglected to say that my wife (Cynthia) also attended the NSU Graduate College about the time I did. I graduated twice from NSU. I graduated in 1997 and in 2001. My wife Cynthia obtained her Master's in Education and her plus 30. I talk to her often, and mentioned each of my visits with Dr. Randall Webb during my class free time. Dr. Webb was an inspiration and encouragement during my campus days. I'm again am thankful for Dr. Webb and his open door policy. He made me feel like member of the NSU family. My condolences to his wife and family for their loss. I think of Dr. Webb often during my life and strive to be more like him. Thanks again for your leadership, kindness, and friendship. Thanks for all you have done for me and others.

I attended NSU from 1994-2002. I earned my BA in Social Work in 1997 and my Master's in Education in 2001 with alternative teacher certification. I was privileged to meet with Dr. Webb several times in his office. He had an open door policy. Dr. Webb was never too busy to not stop and talk to the students on campus. Dr. Webb had family ties in Natchitoches. He also knew my mother's family and my dad's family that were raised in Natchitoches Parish. On campus Dr. Webb always waved at me and spoke to me often. He was a caring man. He loved his college, family, friends, and students. He kept a positive attitude and usually had a smile on his face. Dr. Webb gained and held the respect of those that knew him. I am glad to have know Dr. Webb. I and others will truly miss him. NSU lost a key part of the campus with the loss of Dr. Webb. I think of him often. My condolences to his family.

If any man deserves to sit at the table with our Lord, Randy Webb is one of those. I have know and worked with him for over 25 years, finding no man with more integrity and compassion for family, work, and people. We started at Northwestern under Dr. Robert Alost. I could tell then he was destined for greatness. He certainly didn't disappoint. I had the privilege of working on several projects with Randy, enjoyed my relationship with Brenda and her daughters, friends of my girls too. Northwestern has benefited beyond measure from his love and dedication to his alma mater. No man has ever loved his work, and institution more, and no one will forget that because he has left behind a legacy of greatness. I am fortunate to have known and called him friend. He will be missed by many, but none more than the Northwestern family. Rest in peace my friend.
