Funeral services celebrating the life of Ronald Melder Akins will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at Calvary Baptist Church, Alexandria with Reverend Danny George and Dr. B. David Brooks officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Park.
Visitation will be observed Monday, March 31, 2014, at Hixson Brothers Funeral Home, Alexandria from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and resume at the church Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.
Ron Akins, 66, of Alexandria, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated educator. He was an avid outdoorsman with a deep love of the bayou where he had resided since his retirement in 2011.
A 1965 graduate of Bolton High School, he received a pre-law degree from Louisiana College and his master's degree in Education Administration and Economics from Louisiana State University. He began his teaching career at Carter C Raymond High School in Lecompte in 1970 and began teaching at Bolton High School in 1974. At Bolton he served as Debate Coach and CUMTUX Advisor until 1990 when he was appointed assistant principal. He was principal at Bolton High School from 1991-2000. From 2000 until 2010 he served as Director of the Magnet program for Rapides Parish Schools and as liaison with the Rapides Foundation. Akins was the 1979 Louisiana Debate Coach of the Year. He was named a Faulkner Fellow at the University of Mississippi in 1986 and Distinguished Educator by Jesuit High School in 1987 for his work in the state high school debate program. He was a member of the Rotary Club where he was given the Youth Service Award in 1989. He served as President of Rapides Parish Principal's Association and Louisiana Principal's Association. He was chosen as Louisiana Principal of the Year in 2000. He also served on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
He had served on the Board of Directors for the Cenla Federal Credit Union since 1985. He was also on the Board of Directors of the Workforce Investment Board of the Rapides Parish Police Jury.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John D. Akins and Juanita Melder Akins and a sister Lauris Mitzie Gremillion.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Little Akins; daughter, Emily Akins Wilkins and husband Toby; son, John Robert Akins and wife Becky and grandchildren Colton and Carter Wilkins and Peyton and Andi Akins. He is also survived by three sisters: Reba Williams, Jackie Ward, and Jill Goulart and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers honored to serve are Mark Gremillion, Jared Williams, John Williams, Jack Little, Rob Little and Brady Jones.
