Dr. Joseph W. Belgard

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Dr. Joseph W. Belgard at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at St. Rita Catholic Church, with Rev. Bruce Miller officiating. Interment will follow in Alexandria Memorial Gardens under the direction of John Kramer & Son Funeral Home.

Visitation will begin on Saturday, February 15, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and resume on Sunday from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., all at the funeral home. A Christian Wake Service and Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, with Rev. Dan O'Connor Officiating.

Dr. Joseph W. Belgard, 87, of Alexandria passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2014 in CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.

Joseph Belgard was born on March 5, 1926 in Natchitoches, LA to Winfield Hancock and Marie Rowena Breda Belgard. He was an alumnus of Bolton High School, class of 1944. Dr. Belgard completed his pre-optometric studies at Louisiana College in 1951 and received his doctorate at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee on September 17, 1954. Dr. Belgard practiced in Alexandria, Lafayette, DeRidder, Opelousas, Winnfield, Jena and retired in 2005. He was a clinical associate of the Optometric Extension Program, member of the Illumination Engineering Society and the Civitan Club. Dr. Belgard also was a member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Van de Ven Council #3200 and was named "Knight of the Year" in 1964. As an outreach to the community, he gave graciously of his time for the Louisiana Eye Foundation in screening for Glaucoma and Diabetes.

Dr. Belgard's pastime included his love for art and oil painting. He painted his own rendition of the "Battle of New Orleans" in honor of Our Lady of Prompt Succor. Dr. Belgard gifted this painting in memory of his father to Our Lady of Prompt Succor School here in Alexandria.

He is survived by his two sisters: Alice W. Nettles, and Coralie B. Cook and her husband Alfred, Sr.; one brother J. Emile Belgard and his wife Bobbie, all of Alexandria; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers honored to serve will be Paul L. Nettles, Barry L. Nettles, Austin D. Nettles, Alfred E Cook, Jr., Robert W. Cook, Brian Whitten, Preston Whitten and Larry C. Lashley, Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be Larry W. Feazel, Mark E. Belgard, Brian G. Belgard, David L. Belgard, Adam C. Nettles, and Alfred E. Cook, III.
