The Guest Book is expired.
Sarah Vanoil Simmons Adams, age 92 of Jena, passed from this life on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Christus St.Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria. She was born on January 29, 1922, to the union of Iley and Rosa Sikes Simmons, and was the oldest of ten children born to the couple.
Mrs. Adams spent her early life near the town of Sikes in Winn Parish and was a graduate of Sikes High School. She played basketball and was a lifelong supporter of all sports. Along with her sister, Earlene, she sang in the gospel quartet known as the "Sikes Girls Quartet" and the group sang all across the southern U.S. The family gathered around the radio to hear the group sing from Dallas. At the time of her death, Mrs. Adams was the last surviving member of the group. She also attended Northwestern State in Natchitoches.
She married the love of her life, Thomas Adams, in 1941 and the couple enjoyed 57 years of marriage until his death in 1998. The couple moved around a little in the early years but settled in Jena in 1953. The family vacation became an annual event, and the couple instilled in their children a love to travel. She was a homemaker and in her later years worked at Carpenter's Department Store and Don's Menswear. Mrs. Adams had a love for working in her yard and in the 1960's and 1970's she was known for her rose garden. She would graciously give flowers to the Town of Jena for bouquets for special occasions, as well as many weddings.
Visitation for Mrs. Adams will be held on Saturday, April 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, and from 12 to 2p.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2014. A graveside service will be held at the Jena Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Nick Andrews officiating, under the direction of Hixson Brothers, Jena.
