George A. Tuma

Funeral services for Mr. George A. Tuma will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 4, 2014 in the chapel of Hixson Brothers in Pineville with the Reverend Emmitt Belgard and Danny Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Czech Cemetery, Libuse. Visitation will be Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

George Albert Tuma, age 92, passed away on Sunday, June 1st at his residence in Libuse. George was a devoted husband, son, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend to his family and to members of the community.

He was a lifetime member of the Rapides Parish Farm Bureau having served as president for several terms and on the board of directors for many years. He was active on the state level as well, and attended state and national conventions for many years.

George was also a member of the Louisiana Sweet Potato Advisory Committee, the Cattleman's Association, the National Rifle Association, and the Louisiana Czech Heritage Association. He served as president of the Louisiana Czech Museum Board of Directors for the past ten years, and thoroughly enjoyed the Czech music of his heritage traveling to numerous festivals in Texas and Oklahoma. He also traveled to the Czech Republic to visit the family home site.

Mr. Tuma was a World War II veteran and was on active duty in Guam, New Caladonia, Bouganville, the Fiji Islands, and the Philippine Islands.

George and his wife, Marie, owned and operated Tuma's General Merchandise in Libuse for thirty seven years. He also served as the assistant postmaster of Libuse from 1949 to 1986.

A retired cattleman, soybean and sweet potato farmer, George continued to be a part of his sons farming activities until the last year of his life. He enjoyed gardening, growing mayhaws and strawberries, making jelly and wine, picking pecans, cutting wood, bee keeping, fishing, and was an avid hunter belonging to the Deer Paradise Hunting Club for many years.

He always had time for his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed growing strawberries for them and taking them fishing, hunting, and teaching them how to make jelly and homemade wine. Family was the center of his life, and he and his late wife hosted the annual Tuma family reunion each year, and in April of this year, the family celebrated the 50th year of these reunions.

George is preceded in death by his wife, Marie Bernat, son, Ted L. Tuma, daughter-in-law, Anna Johnson Tuma, his parents, Emil and Veronika Tuma, his sisters, Helen Kramel and Mildred Sasser, and his brothers, Harry, Elmer, Charles, and Eddie Tuma.

He leaves behind his baby sister, Yarmila Williams of Libuse, and his twin brother, Jerry of Pineville. Also left to cherish his memories are his children: Georgie Robertson and husband, Les, of Round Rock, Texas, Gus Tuma, Dexter Tuma and wife, Cherie, Harvey Tuma, Walter Tuma, William Tuma, Carolyn Tuma, Donald Tuma, all of Libuse, and his daughter-in-law, Dee Tuma of Mansfield, Louisiana and grandchildren, Michael Robertson and finance' Mandy Wolff, Keith Robertson and wife, Dr. Sarah Collins of Austin, Texas, Christopher Tuma and wife, Brittany, Kayla Milstead, and husband, Jeff, Jeremy Tuma and wife, Jennifer, Buck Tuma and wife, Josie, Nickie Lucas and husband, Nathan, Ashley Bardwell and husband, David, Amy Paul and husband, Conrad, Katie Tuma, and Josh Tuma and wife, Leigh, 17 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers are his grandsons, Michael Robertson, Keith Robertson, Christopher Tuma, Jeremy Tuma, Buck Tuma, and Josh Tuma.
