Betty Jean Lowentritt Kaplan

Services for Betty Jean Lowentritt Kaplan will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11th at B'Nai Israel Traditional Synagogue, 1907 Vance Avenue, Alexandria with Rabbi Joseph Telushkin officiating. Private Interment will follow.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10th at John Kramer & Son Funeral Home.

Betty Jean Lowentritt Kaplan, age 78, of Alexandria, passed away on Monday, June 9th.

She is preceded in death by parents, Hannah Kahn Lowentritt & Leo L. Lowentritt, Sr., her husband, Dr. Bernard Kaplan, brothers-in-law Nate Kaplan, Gus Kaplan and Sheldon Greenberg.

Jean was born in New Orleans and raised in Winnsboro, Louisiana and Tchula, Mississippi. She graduated as Salutatorian from Winnsboro High in 1953. In 1957, she received a Bachelors degree in Economics from Newcomb College of Tulane University. In 1966, she was a member of the first graduating class at the LSUA School of Nursing.

In addition to raising her seven children, Mrs. Kaplan was involved in many community organizations, including Hadassah, Junior League, Temple Sisterhood, Rapides Parish Medical Society Auxiliary, Jewish Children's Regional Service, Cenla United Jewish Communities and B'Nai Israel Traditional Synagogue. Mrs. Kaplan had a diverse career path that included being a labor and delivery nurse at St. Francis Cabrini Hospital. Later, she joined her mother-in-law, Lena Kaplan Mykoff and brother-in-law Nate Kaplan in the family business, The Fair Store. Eventually she returned to nursing, working along side her beloved husband, Dr. Bernard Kaplan.

Mrs. Kaplan is survived by her devoted brothers: Dr. Leo Lowentritt, Jr. (Beverly) of Alexandria; Henry Lowentritt (Jane) of New Orleans; sisters-in-law Betty Greenberg of Beaumont; Zelda Kaplan of Alexandria. She is also survived by her seven adoring children: Deborah Kaplan of Houston; Dr. Meyer Kaplan (Shelley) of Alexandria; Dr. Rachel Hausmann (Dr. Mark) of Baton Rouge; Miriam Levy (Marty) of St. Louis; Dr. David Kaplan of New Orleans; Judith Kiefer (Shawn) of New Orleans; Dr. Jonathan Kaplan (Kelsey) of San Francisco. She is also survived by loving grandchildren Leah, Shira & Benjamin Kaplan of Alexandria; Hannah, Nate, Benjamin & Jacob Hausmann of Baton Rouge; Sara Lynn & Jeremy Levy of St. Louis and Gus & Lee Kiefer of New Orleans; as well as many special nieces and nephews.

The family expresses their sincere gratitude to Angela Lemoine, Dianna Smith, Olivia Lynch and Mae Ola Booze for their loving care. Many thanks to Dr. Craig Pearce, Paulette Boone and staff for their tender care and attention to our mother.

Serving as pallbearers are Dr. Leo Lowentritt, Jr., Henry Lowentritt, Dr. Meyer Kaplan, Dr. David Kaplan, Dr. Jonathan Kaplan, Dr. Mark Hausmann, Marty Levy, Shawn Kiefer
