Ruth Arlene Starkey

Funeral services for Ruth Arlene Starkey will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Grace Presbyterian Church, 4900 Jackson St., Alexandria, with the Reverend Bob Vincent officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Pineville, under the direction of Hixson Brothers of Alexandria.

The family requests that visitation be observed Saturday at the Church from 9:00 a.m. until time of service.

Ruth went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at her residence after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was born in Pleasant Hill, Missouri and graduated from Pleasant Hill High School. She earned a B.A. in Education from Central Missouri State University and an M.A. in Education from the University of Missouri. She did additional post-graduate work at Florida State University and the University of Missouri. Ruth taught physical education, health, and math in the public school systems in Missouri, Florida, and Kansas. In Louisiana, she taught math and English as a Second Language

(ESL) for 20 years at Pineville Jr. and Sr. Highs and Bolton High School. Ruth sponsored four of her ESL students to the advanced high school junior/senior -year at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts in Natchitoches, LA. Each graduated and received scholarships to major universities. Ruth was a devoted and dedicated teacher and loved her job and her students. Her greatest joy was seeing her students achieve and accomplish things they didn't know they could.

Ruth was also a licensed cosmetologist and a trained electrologist. She loved to make quilts and hangings, write poems for special occasions for family, friends, and students, and enjoyed plays and musicals.

Ruth is survived by her husband of 36 years, Dale Arthur Starkey; her son, Daniel Aaron Starkey; two sisters, Melba Jean Crain (Don) of Bartlesville, Oklahoma and Lois Ann Kimrey (Herbert) of Pleasant Hill, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Austin Wesley Burris and Pearl Nadine Sechrest Burris; three brothers, Ralph Otis Burris, Raymond Lee Burris, and Donald Dean Burris.

Pallbearers honored to serve will include Blair Bice, Frank Elliott, John Hall, Cal Hoge, Robert James and Randy Starkey.

Honorary pallbearers will include Dick Ayres, Harvey Benson, Merrill Blackburn, Donald Crain, Herbert Kimrey and McGinty McBride.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Cancer Center and Hospice for their compassionate care during her illness.
