A celebration of life memorial service for Margaret Anne Byars Matthews will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. David Brooks and Dr. Cliff Stewart officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 12:30 p.m. until time of service.

Mrs. Matthews, 82, of Alexandria, passed away on January 22, 2011 in her residence.

Born and reared in Corinth, Mississippi, she was a resident of Alexandria since January 1952. A graduate of Stetson University in Deland, Florida, she received her B.M. degree in Piano Pedagogy. Her teaching career in piano and music theory spanned seven decades. In addition to private instruction, Mrs. Matthews was a music theory teacher at LSUA and taught piano lesson at Poland Elementary & Jr. High School for numerous years. She was employed at Roark Music Company as a bookkeeper and clerk for 16 years.

Trained classically, Margaret also performed for multiple civic clubs, schools, jazz combos, receptions, diners, wedding parties, rehearsals, etc. She was a member of the Matinee Music Club where she served as accompanist for Ann Coughlin.

Margaret was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was a member of: the National Piano Teachers Association, National Piano Guild, Louisiana Music Teachers Association, Charter Member of the Cenla Piano Teachers Association, Alphi Xi Delta Society Sorority and Phi Beta Music Fraternity.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Estes Byars and Garner Bryan Byars and two grandsons, William Ryan Matthews and Anthony "Tony" Burns.

Margaret Matthews is survived by two sons, Fredrick Stanley Matthews and wife, Cindy, of Plano, Texas, Mark Nolan Matthews and wife, Toni, of Denham Springs; one daughter, Margaret Lynne Matthews Burns and husband, Gene, of Alexandria; the father of her children, William Harry Matthews; three brothers, Garner Bryan Byars, Jr., Robert Estes Byars and Timothy Scott Byars all of Corinth, Mississippi; one step-sister, Norma Gardiner of Starkville, Mississippi; granddaughters, Elizabeth Renee Matthews of Lansdale, Pennsylvania; Heather Lynne Thibodeaux and husband, Dwight of Denham Springs, Stephanie Anne Matthews of Denham Springs, Chanda Burns Milligan and husband, Michael of Paragould, Arkansas and Megan Margaret Burns of Alexandria; grandsons, Benjamin Robert Matthews of Plano, Texas, Bryan Joseph Matthews and wife, Jessie Arceneaux of San Antonio, Texas, Craig Doyle Matthews of Raymond, Mississippi, Mark Nolan Matthews, Jr. and his wife, Christy of Denham Springs, Cory Alden Matthews of Denham Springs and Jeffrey Taylor Matthews of Denham Springs; one great-grandson, Ian Paul Thibodeaux of Denham Springs; step-grandson, Jason Guidry of Crawfordsville, Arkansas; step-great-grandsons, Tanner Guidry and Sawyer Guidry of Crawfordsville, Arkansas; niece, Beverly Byars Jones of Kennett, Missouri and nephew, Thomas Scott Byars of Corinth, Mississippi.

Memorials in her honor may be made to donor's choice of charity.
