Alan Gregory Mason

Alan Gregory Mason, born Greenwich, CT, son of Mildred and Scott Mason, died March 9, 2014.
Alan graduated from Moses Brown School and Harvard University before earning a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Illinois. He was a gifted childhood musician whose Providence recital at the age of fourteen was reviewed by The New York Times. Alan's interests in math, science, languages, computers, and music were with him throughout his life and in recent years he composed several organ concerti.
Alan taught himself many languages and worked for Plenum Publishing in the 1980s translating Russian and Chinese physics journals. In recent years he wrote a Chinese translation program and was fascinated by ongoing developments in computational biology, chemistry, and genetics.
Alan was raised in Stonington CT, before the family moved to Providence, R.I. His adult years took him to Palo Alto, CA; Champaign, IL; Austin, TX, and most recently back to Rhode Island. He is remembered for his keen wit and sensitivity, and will be sorely missed by those who loved him.
Alan is survived by his father Scott and siblings Phoebe and Caleb. He is predeceased by his mother Millie. A private burial service will be arranged at a later date.
