Helen (Adams) Phinizy


On July 30, 2013. She was loved by everyone who knew her and will be greatly missed. A resident of Connecticut for many years, most recently in Mystic, she was born in Albany, New York, on June 24, 1919, daughter of Alonzo Pelton Adams and Catherine Lois Snyder Adams. She was a graduate of the then-St. Agnes School (now, Doane Stuart) in Albany; attended Bradford Junior College; and graduated Wheelock College, Boston. She became an elementary school teacher and taught the 1st & 2nd grades, but said she was proudest of her role as a mother. In 1944, she married Coles Phinizy, a Sports Illustrated journalist, who predeceased her in 2000. She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Adams Phinizy of Mystic, her son, Coles H. Phinizy, Jr. of New York, and two grandsons, as well as nephews and nieces. Contributions may be made in her memory to the National Audubon Society or the .
