John J. Tanner Sr.

John J. Tanner Sr., 89, of Pawcatuck, passed away at his home on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013. He was the husband of the late Mary "Kay" Tanner.
Born in Pawcatuck, he was a son of the late William and Phoebe Tanner.
John was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a Purple Heart recipient. He worked as a postal clerk in Westerly for 44 years until his retirement. He was a communicant of St. Michael Church, a member of the Pawcatuck Harley P. Chase Post #1265 and the Knights of Columbus #21.
He is survived by his children, John J. Tanner Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Charlestown; Sally Gauthier and her husband, Norm, of Oakdale, Conn.; and Susan Bessette and her husband, David, of Pawcatuck. He also leaves six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. John was predeceased by three siblings.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. in Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A funeral liturgy will take place in St. Mary's Church, 95 Main St., Stonington on Thursday at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Michael Cemetery, Pawcatuck. For online condolences, please go to
