Samuel "Boiled Ham" Cozzolino, 85, of Potter Hill Road, Westerly, passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon, March 24, 2013. He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Dorothy, and two sisters, Teri Chiaradio and Mary Olson. He leaves behind his four children, Rocky, Allison, Charles and Deano; and seven grandchildren, Seth, Caleb, Amanda, Chad, Ashley, Brandon and Casey.
Sam was born in Westerly on July 24, 1927, the son of the late Charles and Carmella Cozzolino, of Acri, Italy. He was a lifelong resident of Westerly who was very proud of the town and his Italian heritage. As a young man, he enlisted in the U.S. Army
and served his country proudly in World War II
and the Korean War
, receiving honorable discharges. He worked for the civil service, retiring from the U.S. Submarine Base in Groton. Sam made regular trips to Maine where he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He enjoyed studying the history of the Civil War, which was shown by his extensive library. He traveled to many battlegrounds from this war. He loved his weekend treks out to area yard sales and antique shops where he acquired his collections of antiques. He will be missed dearly by his family.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Church, 111 High St., Westerly. There will be no procession from the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will take place at St. Sebastian Cemetery, Westerly.
