Charles J. Koulbanis, 88, of 19 Bayberry Road, Westerly, R.I., passed away at home on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014.
Born in Westerly, R.I., on Nov. 6, 1925, he was the son of the late James and Mary (Sitaras) Koulbanis both of Westerly.
Mr. Koulbanis attended Westerly High School and was a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. He also served proudly in the United States Marine Corp, during World War II with the VMB 423 Seahorse Marine Squadron.
He was an accomplished architect. After graduating from RISD in 1955, he began his long and distinguished career starting with the firm of Skidmore Owings Merrill in New York City. He then started his own firm Koulbanis Brandreth Associates in 1961 with offices in New York City and Westerly, R.I. Locally his firm can be recognized for the design of the newest addition of the Westerly Public Library.
Charlie, as he was known to many, was an avid sailor and longtime member of both the Watch Hill and the Westerly Yacht Clubs. He was interested in global sailing positioning by means of celestial navigation which he taught for years in New York City while living there. He also enjoyed a life time love of woodworking.
He will be sadly missed by his sister, Madeline Koulbanis and his brother, John Koulbanis both of Westerly, R.I. He was also the loving uncle of Mary Z. Delisio of Westerly, James J. Koulbanis, and Christine A. Lamb of Westerly, R.I., Nicholas J. Koulbanis of Cambridge, MA, Richard J. Koulbanis and John A. Koulbanis of Westerly, R.I., and Paul C. Koulbanis of HI. He also leaves eleven great nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister and brother; Sultana K. Zicojohn and James "Argie" Koulbanis.
The Koulbanis family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday from 4-7 p.m., at the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly, R.I. Funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m., at Christ Church corner of Elm and Broad St. Burial will follow with full military honors in River Bend Cemetery.
