George H. Weeden, 85, of Tomaquag Road, Ashaway, RI, died peacefully on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at his home. He was the beloved husband of Marjorie L. (James) Weeden.
Born in Ashaway, RI, on December 16, 1927, he was the son of the late Eben P. and Elizabeth (Gavigan) Weeden.
George was a graduate of Westerly High School Class of 1946. He participated and excelled in all sports and was named All-State for the Westerly High School baseball team. Following high school graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He received The World War II Victory Medal.
Upon discharge from service, he graduated from the 1949 Rhode Island State Police Academy and remained with the RI State Police for 21 years. During his service with Rhode Island State Police, he received the Departments Service Ribbon to mark his courage and ability valued by the State.
He served as Commandant of the RI State Police Training Academy.
George retired from the Rhode State Police in 1971 with the rank of Adjutant Captain, the third highest post.
George then became Director of Security for former Outlet Department Stores and Outlet Communications, based in Providence, RI.
He was appointed Chief of Police for the Town of Hopkinton, RI, in 1986 and retired as Chief in 1997.
He was also a graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy for Police Officers. He graduated from the Community College of Rhode Island with a degree in Applied Science and Technical Studies.
He was past President of Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association.
Throughout his law enforcement career, he served on many police administration boards throughout New England.
George enjoyed spending time with his family, being outdoors, and was an ardent golfer.
In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by his children; Karen W. Patrick (Wayne) of Freeport, FL, John G. Weeden( Janet) of Rockville, RI, and Peter J. Weeden of Ashaway, RI. He is also survived by his sister; Susan W. Palmer of Voluntown, CT and sister-in-law Winifred K. Weeden of Ashaway, RI, and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Frances W. Barnes, Eileen W. Stewart and Eben P. Weeden.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, September 23, 2013, at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Victory Church, 169 Main Street, Ashaway, RI. Burial with full Military Honors will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Ashaway, RI.
The Weeden Family will greet relatives and friends on Sunday, September 22, 2013 from 4-7 PM at the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St. Westerly, RI.
