Jean Brown

Jean (Smith) Brown, 83, of Mystic, beloved wife of the late Lawrence M. Brown, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at Stoneridge in Mystic.
Born in Burlington, Vt., and raised in Longmeadow, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Clement C. and Marion (Mullings) Smith.
Jean was a former school teacher and professional artist who was best known for her folk art paintings on natural wood. Most of her artwork was shown through the Woodstock Gallery in Woodstock, Vt.
Jean was an avid tennis player, paddle player golfer and, in her later years, a competitive bridge player. Jean and her husband Larry raised their family in Weston, Mass. They also enjoyed vacationing or living in the greater Mystic area for the last 50-plus years with time spent on Groton Long Point, Mason's Island and most recently, Mystic. She was also a former resident of The Landings in Savannah, Ga.
She is survived by her three children; Dr. Steven L. Brown and his wife, Claudia; Laura B. McGown and her husband, Michael, all of Bedford, N.H.; and Scott D. Brown and his wife, Joan Beth (Daukas), of Watch Hill; a brother, Doug Smith, of Greenfield, Mass.; and eight grandchildren, Emily and Maxwell Brown; Kaitlin, Molly, and Maggie McGown; and Nicholas, Christopher and Tucker Brown.
Funeral services and burial are private. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center in Mystic.
